Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of depression and related factors among middle school students. These informations would provide fundamental information for developing nursing practice for depression.

Method: The participants were 343 middle school students in D city. Data were collected using structured questionnaire from September 13 to 27, 2007. Collected data were analyzed by Frequencies, Percentage, Means, Standard Deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe test using SPSS Program.

Results: The participants level of depression was 15.36 which means mild depression. Religion, father¡¯s level of education, mother employment, economy, grade, satisfaction of school life and self-rated health status were factors related to the level of depression among the study participants.

Conclusion: Middle school age is a starting point to became a healthy adolescence. Health care providers need to increase awareness toward decreasing levels of depression among middle school students.
